I plan on using the laptop to the db9 programming connector on the front, I have never programmed this unit, it came already to go, will the controller and laptop give a menu screen? I was told it would only give me a prompt..

M38A's can be "programmed" via DTMF over the air or dumb terminal or with the Model 8 programmer time keeper, either direct connect or over the air thru a radio..
I have the manuals on these and could copy the needed pages, let me know.

Will, I have a 38a with 1989 firmware, do you happen to know them well enuf to tell me if it can be "upgraded" to allow the later "options" like CTCSS DELAY and the other RB and AND squelch features?

Now that was my next question,,what is the pinout for the programming cable??

I was told by another source to use this sequence below..

DB9 DB25

pin 3 to pin 3

pin 4 to pin 2

pin 5 to pin 7

This does not work for me here, can anyone correct this pinout??

Thanks Again...

I have a 38a panel here as well. Same firmware vintage 1989. How do you get around the password? No one has a clue what it is here and the shop that sold the panel is long out of business. Also its not the default zetron password. Is there a way to reset the entire panel and start fresh?

You have me both trying to remember about getting around the password. Played with those about 10 or 12 years ago. Have had two different panels over the course of time from different venders.

If my gray matter is still on track, I think that I was told by Zetron to swap the 2 small proms around in the 38 panel. This would cause a system reset and all the information would default back to the factory setting like it was just shipped to you.

I will have to go look up in my manuals when I get home.

Jim, swapping the proms sounds right for a mastster reset. For a soft reset, jumper pin 2 to three on the front pannel and power up the pannel. I will have the scanner up tomarrow or sun if you still need the sheets from the manual. I also have the upgrade information for the 1989 to 1995 versions. You may need to copy the proms ans I don't know if they are still available.
(gots LOTS of M38s running out here)

Ok I will try the prom swap. I want to clear out the funky programing that is in it now. The moron that programed it years ago has the courtesy tone set and its REALLY annoying.

Just call Zetron and talk to tech support, I was told to take the RAM CHIP out of the unit for 5mins this will reset it back to factory defults including the password.. or if you have the time the 38A uses "12***" as the password field so the defult is 123 ad the 12 in front of the 123, now you only have 998 other numbers to try :smile:12001, 12002,12003,12004,12005 up to 12999 you will hit it in an hour or so...you then can once you gain access to it,clear all programming from the menu screen and start fresh...
