How are you doing this?????

Post by Blazeorange »

Hey.......Have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 4x4 (not Z-71) that I want to install a 100 Watt Maratrac in. I looked and I don't see any grommets that readily enter the passenger compartment from the firewall to run the power cable to in the engine block.

Did I miss something or am I going to have to get the drill out? I plan to use heavy power cable as this is a High Wattage radio and I was hoping to run through an existing grommet with other wires.

Any ideas or similar stories?

Thanks.

Blaze.

I drilled a nmo sized hole and used a rubber plug (with a hole in it) for the power cable for my icom 706.

It worked well, and it's waterproof.

The best way is to find a spot you can visualize on both sides of the firewall.. Usually on the same side as the battery. Usually just under the area of the brake booster is a good place to look.. Once you find it make a test hole with a small drill bit. Once you can see the hole then make a larger hole. My minimum is 1" But a 8G for a maratrac a 7/8" is plenty. Once you drill the hole then use a snap bushing or rubber grommet. Run the wire and when you are done a nice gob of silicone is what will keep your feet fry....

If you really want to use an existing grommet, use the one for the hood latch. Follow the cable until you get to the firewall. It will come out on the driver's side between the fender and the electrical junction box. I believe the 99s had a spare grommet right underneath the other ones. If you pull the heatshield back from the area just behind the emergency brake there may be a spare one already.
