MTS2000 Questions

Post by kf4lhp »

I've got a UHF MTS2000, model H01RDD9PW1BN. Radio powers up fine, but after powerup will beep six times and show "KYFAIL" in the display, then it goes back to the alpha tag for the channel it's tuned to. I assume this means that it has lost the encryption keys in the module?

Also, I took it by my local shop to have it reprogrammed, and they tell me that it was apparently programmed with a newer version than they have. They are running R06.04.00, September 30 1999 - what's the latest version, and is there any way to tell from the test mode in the radio what version of RSS I'd need to reprogram it?

Thanks in advance.

Just a Guess

Just a guess at this, but I believe the beeps and the failure message "KYFAIL" is what your thinking.

As for the second question I don't think that there's a way to tell what it was programmed with, and i'm not too sure about the software revision, I have an older one then the shop you went to.

All my VHF MTS2000's in my fleet have the key failure message, which you are correct, its because the radio is without an encryption key.

As for the software, I am running into the same problem, my last RSS update was 6.04 in 9/99, and the radios that i just got back from the depot i cant touch because they were programmed with the newer windows version of MTSX, of which i have never recieved.

R6.05 is the latest DOS rss for the MTS/MTX series. I don't know what the current version of the Windows CPS is but from what I remember, if a radio was programmed with CPS it could still be read with DOS R6.05.

The last update I recevied was MTS2000 Customer Programming Software R01.05.14, I beleive that is still the most current (it was released 8/2001). When dealing with DOS codeplugs the readme file states:

Codeplug archive files saved to disk with the DOS
RSS can be opened in the MTS2000 CPS only after
conversion. The CPS Archive Converter allows you
to convert DOS RSS archives to CPS-compatible
format. Activate the CPS Archive Converter (Start
->Programs->Motorola->MTS2000 Radio->CPS Archive
Converter) and convert yourcodeplugs either
individually, in groups, or on your entire hard
drive. The CPS Archive Converter can convert both
MTS2000 and MTS2000 DOS archives to the CPS-
compatible format.

When I tried to read a radio programed with CPS using DOS Ver R06.04.00 I get the error message codeplug to new unable to read.

The archive converter won't convert CPS back to DOS.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, gang.

I emailed the supervisor for the city's radio shop here and he tells me that per Motorola's web site (not sure specifically what he was looking at), they no longer list the DOS RSS and the current Windows CPS they listed was R01.07.00, p/n RPX4719G.

Hi all!

My MTS2000 (H01RDD 9PW1BN 432AXC 0853, 000001-000000-9) power up ok (w/o any alerts), in generally works ok (incl. transmitting), but only if security switch in CLEAR position.

But when i set switch into the SECURE position and try press PTT, display show my KYFAIL message.

What it mean?

As could be found out with a bit of searching: All it means is that your radio is encryption-capable, but has not been loaded with an encryption key.

You do not need to ever worry about this unless you plan to talk to another radio (or a radio system) that also has (and uses) encryption.

You will need at least a T3011DX keyloader, and appropriate cable, to load an encryption key.

What it mean? That some encryption module installed in radio?
but has not been loaded with an encryption key.
Ok.

HLA is correct:

The newest windows version of the MTS software is R02.00.01. The newest version of DOS is R06.08.00. If I remember correctly the new version of DOS ships when you order the new CPS.

I should have added that the part number for the MTS software is RVN4176S and cost me $334.80 CAD.

why not just untick the secure equiped field.
the keyfail problem will go away. You will get keyfail if you there is no board installed but it is enabled.
Open the radios and the bottom should have 2 boards if equiped , 1 if not. Anyway disable in RSS and problem solved
