arrow-stick problem

Post by schlab »

the car i received last week has all 6 led-x modules burned out in the rear. all the ones burned out were the amber modules for the built in arrow-stick. the install was done by another shop and is running off of a federal-signal control box, i just thought it was real weird that all 6 modules were burned out, just wondering if anybody could help so i have a direction to work from
thanks

the led modules are "burned out" ? I know eventually an LED will bite the can, however are you sure they are dead? Is there power being run to the units?

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

I saw a similar thread posted on elightbars or somewhere else. I'd have to agree..power or controller issue. I have yet to see a LED fail, but they have...but I know some have...just less likely than other lights.

Does that unit use simple 12 volt or does it need a regulated controller? If it needs something special and the dippy-doos put a 12v controller on it, they could very will have blown it up. Although I would imagine they would have noticed the smoke in the shop when they installed it...

I'd bet on something just not being hooked up correctly.

I'd be willing to bet the amber LED modules are getting nuked by the FS control box sending 12v to them. What are the spec's on the LED-X arrowstick?

Are you sure you're using the proper controller? I know some controllers use the ground side to switch the lights on and off, and some use the positive side. Not sure which does which offhand though.

He's right, most that I have seen are Negitive switched and they might not work with that controller. It's VERY unlikely that they burned out, unless they have overvoltage to them, but most are set up for 12volts. I'd check the wiring to the controller.

For a FedSig controller, it is (-) output side switched. Make sure that all the (+) are tied together and the (-) leads go to the controller. I used a FedSig controller to make my own "home brew" arrow stick myself. Put the "common" (+) leads in the RED slot, and the rest go to the colorcoded slots, keeping in mind if you have 6 or less lights the BLUE and the WHITE slots are not used on the controller.
