I have to say that I think you did a very good job with the install. It would be really cool if I could get a troy console bracket that fit a screen like that, or have that apco25 guy who's good with fabricating metal stuff do it :-D.

I have a few of these, and access to more...

I need to figure out a way to mount it, the docking station even has 10/100 ethernet, serial control, parrellel, vga out. The actual system has modem, usb, Type II PCMCIA, Audio in/out, and... compact flash.

I've been thinking about seeing If I can just buy a 7" plate, and mount the dock to the truck, and then I can simply pull the tablet in and out when i'm not using it, or need to use it.

It already has a touchscreen, so that's covered.

Alex,
For your application, look at the MW800 and MW520 mounts from Havis. They're a little more adaptable than the Troy MW520 mount. (hit me up for pricing so you can comparison shop if you'd like)

Actually, my thought was to buy a 4" blank panel, and then mount the docking station to it somehow.

I don't know, just tossing out ideas. I could easily replace the GPS that I have now with a plate, and use the computer for it. I have a USB 250gb hard drive that would hide nicely in the glove box too.

So what part needs to be fabricated? A screen mount? We could probably have something made up for the screen like a vertical tray and
then use off the shelf parts like RAM mounting arms.

Any of the universal keyboard trays and mounts should work.

MrBMW - where do you get those screens?

Looks like dimension wise, these wouldn't fit behind a troy mount:

Dimensions and Weight
9.6" x 6.3" x 1.1" (min)/1.6" (max)
(244mm x 160mm x 28mm (min)/40mm (max)
2.65 lbs. (1.2Kg) with battery pack

I have the Lilliput 7" Touchscreen model. There is a largescale problem with the touchscreens going nutz on these (I had the problem too). I wouldn't recommend you buy one until we know that they have been fixed. I would instead recommend you look into the Xenarc brand screens. They are very nice and high quality - maybe even a bit brighter than the Lilliputs too. You can buy them from several places online. Look on eBay for a 7" Xenarc or look on mp3car.com in their store. Xenarc and Lilliput also both make 8" models. I don't believe that there is a problem with the Touchscreen on the 8" Lilliput, so if you'd like to look into that... -BW

Hey alex where did you get that tablet computer, thats really quite nice!

How much did it cost? You mentioned you have access to a few more, willing to sell any? I probably won't be able to afford one, but i might be able to trade if i have anything you want.

Who-hoo! I got the computer today! I got it all setup and running like it should with the right programs, and I got all of my music on there too. Unfortinately, the cheap little power adapter I have for my laptop (which is rated at max 70w cont), couldnt power the system. It made the power led come on, but nothing happened. Soooo that means I have to wait until Monday for the darn CarNetix unit to come in the mail before I can install anything. Sucks tho because there is a meet here in the area on Saturday, a bunch of people locally with systems like this... Mine won't be running though (at least not this PC- ill throw in the laptop).

See Ya!

Cost hasn't been worked out 100% yet. I should have access to more if people are interested, I think the'll end up being around the $300 mark. Not cheap, but affordable.

I think they go on ebay for 300-600.

$300 isn't to bad for the features those little buggers have! I'll have to browse ebay as well then for some ideas, i like the tablet pc for a navigation/media computer. I was thinking of mounting it with the radios on a laptop mount modified to just be a holder for the tablet.

Well, I have a troy console for my truck. I was discussing this with Apco25 last night, about how to mount it.

The dock looks like this (pardon the different image sizes)

The idea I had was to try and have a mount built around the dock - essentially, the part that holds the tablet would be above the console metal, and then under would be the physical ports that the dock get you.

THat would secure the dock to the vehicle, and then you could just pull out the tablet when you weren't in the vehicle.

I would pull the GPS and the top MCS2000 and replace it with this computer, as I'm going through some other communication additions. These photos are from an old thread anyway; http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?t=12718

The docking station for that tablet is nice with all the ports it gives you! I like your mounting idea as well, with all the ports inside the console you can hide all the connections to the external devices, like gps and so forth.

Not to mention i like the idea of being able to pull the tablet out and stash it in a safe place when the vehicle might be parked somewhere for a night, etc.

I can't wait to see install pics when you get it done, i'm thinking of going tablet pc now too!

What really intersts me is using that program to control an XM radio through it too. Seems kinda logical to have one controler. I guess I could also do VRCH if I was so motovated.

Hmm interesting device

I would almost say this would work for you out of the box and its fully adjustable.

http://www.gamberjohnson.com/index.cfm?p_id=377

Sirennet carries these for about $120

Get a motion attachement / clevis and bolt that to a blank faceplate.

Should work perfectly and you don't have to go through all the custom layout work.

nextel me to discuss...

Yeah. I currently have the program setup so it only opens the GPS, but with my programming knowloedge, it wouldnt be hard to incorporate a vRCH or similar application into FrodoPlayer. It launches external apps, but I like them built in. I just saw your pics for the first time, really impressive! I have the 96 Ranger, so its basically the same dash and what-not. I have the 60/40 seats tho. Kinda makes me think again about that console . I'd have to replace the driver seat to make room tho. -BW]

EDIT: Wow! This topic seems to have really generated a lot of discussion! I didn't think I would start this kind of response - all I came for originally was advice on the NMO antenna! Cool!

I think mobile computing is becoming a hot topic these days with the availability of digital music, video, wireless internet, and gps.

I know one that has a nice install, will try to get some pictures out of him. He has an external firewire hard drive on his to store video from a dash mount web cam, that and transfer large files and huge amounts of music from the house to the truck.

I think with the ole' tax return i need to spend some money towards this project and git er done!

Alex - put me down for one. When they "arrive", let me know the total & where to send the postal money order
