How is your site access? World's Highest PS repeater

Got parts of a site done last fall. This pic is on the way down





It was october when those pics where taken. Site is at 13,200 feet. Presently only one VHF repeater (with a backup that is brought up with DTMF) up and running. When the snow melts, there will be 5 repeaters, and voter with 2 recieve sites for one ofthe 5. 90% handheld coverage over 400 square miles! 18 watts erp. 6 degree downtilt antenna. Using Icom fr3000s with great success.

Mosquito Pass, Leadville, Lake County Colorado. Site is only accessible by 4wd (9 bumpy miles) from middle of June till Middle of October.

I have to find my tower pics (only 20' ) but it is pretty cool site.

How is the site powered?

Main power is commercial. Site was "supposed" to be a microwave relay station for xcel energy and construction was started in 1984.

Commercial power goes down mostly from lightining strikes. The transformer that feeds the site is unfused and just goes until blows. I am running 4x150 solar panels with a batter bank for those instances.

Snowmobile access is impossible in the winter and a sno cat is scary. If you look in the pics you can see the power poles going up the pass. The sno-cat route bypasses the switchacks and follows the power lines. The comm shelter has heat as is big enough for a few to sleep in case of emergency.

So basicly the transformer is like a big huge oil filled slow-blow fuse.?

Yep!

And the last one cost almost $20,000 in helicopter time.
