DES-OFB

Post by 123 »

If you have a radio with DES-OFB ONLY,can you make it do DES in analog with that board in the software? Or do you need the DES-XL/DES-OFB config. board to allow it to do the DES analog?

Also another question. Is there a chart for version secure boards go with certain version astro radios?

if you have a dual mode module (OFB and XL for instance) the transmit mode and personality setup determine the algo used.

for instance, on a channel set up for astro transmit, the radio can use XL
-or- OFB to encrypt. in the "SECURE" tab of the personality, you will see a couple of different fields to set up... among which is "enable des-xl transmit default" - checking this tab on an astro mode forces the radio to utilize XL vice OFB to encrypt.

a channel set up for analog transmit defaults to des-xl automatically, since the OFB algo is not compatible with analog voice.

forcing the radio to utilize DES *WITHOUT* XL is a different matter. In the hardware configuration screens, you have to disable XL transmit.... and i am fairly certain that this kills XL on *ALL* your analog channels....

hope that helps,

Let me expound on what doug said about XL transmit.

To transmitt XL you must first tell the radio that its XL capable in the Radio wide Secure field. That will actually (for lack of better words) load the key into the XL portion of the board (if capable of doing XL).

Then you can tell the radio on a per-personality basis, whether or not to TX XL or not. If XL Transmit is unselected in an analog personality, then the radio will TX DES only. And of course if you select the XL Transmit box, it will tx XL for that personality.

This is similar in an astro personality, the only difference is, if you do not select XL transmit, the radio will default to OFB for that personality.

Hope that helps!

doug is correct, if you attempt to use securenet on an analog only channel, with only an OFB board, the radio will respond with "illegal key"

if you try to use securenet on a mixed mode channel with OFB only, even if you normally TX analog on that channel, it will switch it to encrypted IMBE.

understood, I thought that would be the case but figured I would ask. We have a DES MSF-5000 repeater up And the Sheriff's office wants to use it as a "back up" channel for thier narc ops but they only have OFB in the radios. So I was just ruling out that possible angle.
