Is there an elevator inside the bridge tower, or did you have to lug that 160lb MSF5000 up there on a hand truck???

No elevator at all. You gotta pull all large equipment up with a rope. We typically attach a pulley at the top and then the ground crew will pull the equip to the equip room.

And what a beautiful site from the top! Its breath taking!

it varies. i can trip the uhf from my house approximately 30 miles north of the site with an HT in the house.

the vhf is a little more picky, but i can hear it in the house - just can't talk analog on it... digital works ok most of the time inside tho.

overall, the coverage is pretty nice throughout jacksonville.

Actually the first person that owned the UHF machine got the site i think. When he went to Guam the machine was sold to another member in the club and then the VHF machine was added.

Its all about knowing people. And its no hoax, i have been on the top of that pillar while 2 blackhawks flew by at eye level.

ww9z (mark) petitioned the Florida DOT for permission to place the original repeater there in 1998.

it took over a year to get approval for the repeater and antenna.

there is no grounding, and limited power at the equipment room... and it's 220v wired into standard 115v outlets. seems as though they never thought anyone would want to do anything in those rooms, so the only power is the 220v system for the lights... so we tapped that and made our own outlets for the repeaters...works great.

just ask the ham club that plugged their drill into one of the outlets w/o re-wiring it!!!!

SMOKIN!

anyway, rusty is correct....i'll put up some more pics to provide photographic proof of the installation for the nay-sayers.

I would LOVE to see pictures from the top with the antennas, or better yet, a shot of the equipment room. That is one damn nice location, i think i would have an excuse to visit often, like, what was that barely audible sound on the output, etc.

I take it that you have to climb a ladder all the way up if there isn't any elevator? Or is there stairs?

Doug,
I have a couple of drive isolation transformers you can have. They are 120-240 primary, 120/240 seconday. If you want them, let me know via PM how many KVA you need.

Freight is on you though!

Wow, you had to haul all the equipment up those ladders on the outside? That must be quite a job each time you need to visit the site.

no. the dames pt. supports florida state road 9A, which will eventually form the east side of the loop around jacksonville - and will be renamed I-295
