Console for K5 Blazer? First install.

Post by defcon-3 »

Hello,

I am re-doing my install on my 85 Chevy M1009 (Military version of the blazer). I had the Maratrac head mounted to the plate on the dash where the military radio stuff bolts to. I left the middle open for people getting in/out of the vehicle. I want to add another radio, and have no room so I am going to go ahead and redo it right with a console. Can anyone reccomend a console that will work in this vehicle? I will be putting a UHF 25 Watt Maxtrac, A7 99 Ch. Maratrac head, Yaeasu Ft-2500M, Federal 6 switch light box, and I would like a spot for my switch setup for the cross band repeater setup. So basically I need 5 bays to put stuff, or 6, for later additions. Any recommendations? I need something that will fit relatively well, and not cost an arm and a leg, but still look decent. Any recomendations for cooling? I will have the yaesu and the Maxtrac in there, would like to be able to keep them cooler, as all the guts are right there, not like the trunk mount Maratrac. Any other tips as this is practically my first install? I would like something deep, as the seats in the blazer sit up relatively high. Also this is a 4x4, so the shifter is taking up quite a bit of room forward. There is evidence that a console was in here before, its an ex-FD truck, so it can be done. Just need suggestions from people who have done installs on these types of trucks.

Thanks.

I'm starting to think there isn't a console available because of the 4wd on the floor?

Nobody on here has done an install in a similar vehicle??

I was wondering, you mentioned there was evidence of a previous console, can you explain? I'm wondering what they might have used.

I did an install on a K-series Suburban and the transfer case shifter was a real pain. The console ended up being real narrow and somewhat limited as to what could go in it. The ideal situation is either a full size console mounted between the seats or one of the "tree" type organizers that mounts to the floor next to the shifter.

I am getting ready to do our Chevy 3500 military truck which has the same problem. I have the console built and what I did was make a wooden console which was two tiered. On the left side it was lower with a cut out that the 4x4 shifter stuck out of. The right side was higher and had the spot the radios mounted to. I am going to cut black plastic counter top material (can't remember the name of it) and cover all the wood.

I know this won't help you, but in a few months I will have it done and take pictures of it. I am taking my time and doing a little bit at a time on my days off. When I get done it will have a switching system, PA300, LCS2000, M1225, and Firecom headset module. We originally had the M1225, and PA300 on a stand type console, but the addition of the others made it to where we needed to construct something else.
