Removing the back seat...
How do you remove the backseat of a Impala? I've got a civilian version and for the life of me, I'm not seeing how. I just want to remove the back portion, not the seat. I see the "L" hooks in the trunk and I've pulled 'up', but it won't budge. Is there some trick?
Cannot speak authoritatively for an Imp
I cannot speak authoritatively for an Impala, but all the vehicles that I've owned (and have removed the back seats on) have required the removal of the bench (bottom part) first to allow access to the bolts that hold the back down.
Usually, the bench is held down with L shaped hooks on the floorboard of the vehicle. You press inward on the bottom of the bench to move the bench out of the hooks, then lift the bench upward and remove it.
Once this is done, there are usually about 2-4 large bolts that secure the back of the seat to the frame. Remove them, and the back can then be lifted up (disengaging it from the hooks you have seen in the trunk) and removed.
Re-installation is the reverse: put the back in, hook it on, screw the bolts in, put the bench in, press inward and lower the bench, then let it spring forward and re-engage. Usually it will take a couple of tries to get all the bench hooks to re-engage.

This is my opinion, not Aeroflex's.

the actual seat part is easy, just pull up on both ends towards the rear, the front just has clips. the first time I did mine was an accident actually. Very easy to remove the seat. The back on the other hand I am not sure, I would almost think once the seat is up you can unbolt the hinges on the bottom.

I have done several 2002 to 2005 Impala's and they are the same...push on the lower front of the bottom bench seat to unlock them from the clips. Then there are two bolts one on each side in the center holding down the back portion of the seat. The bolts should have large washers on them and go over a "U" style bracket. Once the bolts are removed lift upward on from the bottom of the back seat to release them from the upper stability tabs. Should not take you more than 5 minutes.
