Minitor II caught fire

Post by ffexpCP »

From firefighterclosecalls.com

http://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/fu ... 9e6be68a2e

On 10/08/05 a Bradenville (PA) firefighter discovered his Minitor and charger on fire inside his residence. The Minitor is approx. six years old and was sitting on a glass table top. Nothing around the Minitor/charger sustained any fire damage which indicates the Minitor/charger was the ignition source. They examined it without altering it and the damage does indicate an internal ignition and specifically at or near the contact points on the bottom of the Minitor. We will attempt to gather additional information such as any past mishaps with the Minitor that may have contributed to the fire. Please contact your Motorola sales agency to determine the problem or if the problem may affect your FD.

I can't get the pictures to show up, but you can see them if you follow the link.[/img]

Ironic, ain't it?

There's two reasons they're called 'fire pagers' :D

Minitor II caught fire...

My guess would be an aftermarket battery. If I was a betting man that's where my money would be.... Probably overheated the charging circuit.

Battery

... The after market battery shorted out the CHARGING CIRCUIT is what was implied... Sorry if I wasn't clear with that.

My guess is that they didn't use the proper UL listed transformer designed for the charger as suggested in my previous post several days ago. A proper transformer should either take a short without damage or go open circuit.

These pics have been floating around our area for a few weeks now. I'm convinced that there's more to the story than what we're being told.

I tend to agree 100% with Nand on what caused this- if it WAS caused electrically.

The MII charge rate is controlled by a resistor and the voltage and current capability of the wall wart. If you increase the voltage of the wall wart, the resistor heats.

Charge current is limited by the 200ma current supply of the wall wart. If you increase the current supply capability, you can easilt exceed the current handling capability of the charge resistor.

It's also possible the this never happened as the story is told. It's strange how it just happened to be on a glass table with nothing else around it's also convenient that he just happened to get home when the MII ignited. Hmmm.

Jim you would have to read that article better, because it did'nt say he just happened to get home when his Min.II caught fire. It just clearly siads he discovered his pager on fire, Hhhhhm what does that mean it literaly means that he could had been in the other room or maybe somewhere in the house, but does clearly not state he had just gotten home, just clearly states that you either need glasses to see better or just need to go back to school to get an education in reading. Also i believe that it could happen like that. It also depends on what kind of battery he was using or what kind of charger he was also using. Just my 2 Cents.
