Saber II/III operating instructions for download??

Post by kb0nly »

I know Motorola has operating instructions in .pdf format for download on their website for a lot of older radios, is the Saber II/III instructions also available?

I can't find a link to download though it lists the files as available.

Going to have one soon and i know nothing about them yet!

Thanks! That helps. Now if i could only find an RSS manual to help stumble through this.

Where in the world do you set the channel names? I see the operating manual also mentions that channels may be named. The codeplug i am playing with right now shows that channel names is enabled but i can't find where to enter them.

I can view the channels info, frequency, PL, etc.. And in the top right it shows 01 / and then an empty box. I assume this is where i put the name but it only allows a few characters, all the pictures i can find show up to 8 digits names on the display but i can't figure out how to name them like that.

Had to go dig up a model II codeplug, there...

F4>F5 brings you to the channel screen.

If you then hit F2, it will drop you into the window, like so:

CHANNEL: 01 / 12345_

F3 gets you into:

ZONE: 01 / 123_

Keep in mind that the zone text is hard coded at 3 characters and the channel text is 5 characters - makes it kind of a pain in the but.

Ok, that's how you get to that friggin box. This RSS is going to give me nightmares until i figure it all out!

One last question...

Zones VS Channels Only?

I don't have the radio yet, so just trying to figure everything out. I understand that if i use zones i would have 10 zones of 12. And after reading through the operating manual it's obvious i would use the channel select for 1-12, and use the menu to select Zones 1-10.

But, if i program up for more than 12 channels, i am experimenting with a codeplug that has 60 channels, how the heck does the radio operate for changing channels above 12 now? Do you still select zones but it doesn't call them zones on the menu or what?

In the RSS is just lists 1-60, this codeplug was setup originally with channels only no zones. And i looked at another codeplug with zones. When using zones your limited to 5 characters on the display for the channel name, but when you use channels only you can go to 8 characters which would allow more meaningful naming, but then i wonder how you select channels only having a 12 position rotary channel select.

Anything over 12 channels and there has to be zones (except for those funky 16 channel S1's).

Well, according to the RSS help for F4>F4>H396 (Channel Only Operation), when in this mode the channels are selected via the keypad. I don't know if this disables the channel selector knob (don't know that you can reassign it on a regular Saber), but for this to work I think you'd have to have a full keypad radio. I don't know though, since I never enabled it in any of my radios, it might insert a "channel" item into the menu, that you could use the three buttons of a Saber II to scroll through.

Saber setup...

In "channel only" the top selector knob is not used. You must access the channel via the keypad. I've never set up a Saber this way so I don't know if you can
access the channel direct (e.g., 33+enter) or if you have to step via the keypad
to get to the one you want. Most people use zone and channel anyway.

You might want to take a long and careful look at the options list in the RSS as
this will tell you a lot about what you can do with the radio. Also, make liberal
use of the F1 key for additional information.

Also, when you're setting up the zone name or channel name, use the tab key
to return to the normal, or lower, menu.

RSS manuals are around and show up u-know-where every so often for $25-$35
or so. Most are V7 but they're still good if you're using a V6 RSS.
