Maxtrac, modified for SSM Head ?? What is it for?

Post by Max-trac »

I have a VHF Maxtrac 25w 16pin logic board.
It has a factory sticker, "MODIFIED FOR SSM HEAD"
On the 9313 logic board, JU808 is missing, and a wire from the center pin has been added that goes over to the right front (as you look in) to a pad marked "VST".

It has EPROM ACHLN9333B, ver 5.34 (which has the same checksum as a normal 5.34 chip).

What is this mod for????

SSM = Smart Status Message

An SSM head is a box that looks like DEK. It has buttons that can be programmed to send status or message MDC1200 signals. It can respond to call alert MDC signals.

It also has the ability to sent "smart" status packets from various events which can be initiated by external contact closure. It has its own RSS and programming cable.

The SSM could be installed on a variety of products including Maxtrac to add more MDC functionality than the radio came with [although the newer "signalling" Maxtracs are pretty good on their own]

SSM stuff:

SSM RSS: RVN4039B
RIB to SSM cable: FKN5825A
SSM Installation Manual: 68P02977G45
SSM Instruction Manual: 68P02966G80

Is the difference between a SSM box and a DEK small, in the case of a firmware change, or is completely different? Just asking.

The SSM option was sold beginning in the late 1980's. The internal board is entirely different from the DEK, although the housing and buttons are physically the same. In addition to the Maxtrac, the SSM head could be interfaced with the MoCom-70, Mitrek, Maratrac, and perhaps the Syntor.
The system was interfaced at the base station or control point with a Base Station Controller, which is no longer supported by Motorola. It was a neat system and worked well.
If anyone would like a carton of SSM heads, BSC, and manuals, please PM me. Removed system in 2001, free to good home. Cleaning basement.
