Can someone help me understand what IR's are and how they work?
TIA

Firmware in the [properly optioned] Quantar base station allows one or more stations to become a remote site in a Smartzone 3 or Smartzone 4 system without having a separate site controller - in other words the stations(s) take the place of the controller's "intelligence" - hence Intellirepeater.
In Smartzone 6X P25 systems the same basic thing is done but they call it an Intelli-site repeater.

I have a OLD type II system that needs to be replaced. I have another agency that wants to install a 4.1 SmartZone site where I'm located. They mentioned setting up an IR to replace my OLD system instead of putting us directly on the 4.1 system. Will the IR system hung off the 4.1 system be a separate SmartNet system with a different system ID, user ID's and talkgroups?
Can the IR system become a backup at that site if that 4.1 site fails and in the reverse, can the 4.1 system be a backup to the IR system?
If I'm not in range of the IR system, can I access a talkgroup on the IR system from the 4.1 SmartZone system? I assume not unless the two talkgroups are patched.
TIA

Yep, you could do that. I doubt the correctly optioned machines come up on ebay very often...they are only set-up for Intelli-repeater operation if they are purchased from Motorola as a system, or as additional repeaters for systems. I have only set-up a single 4 channel system once several years ago, but it was pretty slick & easy.mr.syntrx wrote:So you could theoretically grab a couple of correctly optioned machines off ebay, hook them up back to back, and have a poor man's trunking system?
That's pretty nifty.

It is pretty near impossible for an IR system to completely fail. In a multi repeater system anyone of the repeaters assigned as possible control channel can assume the control channel function and take over from a failing station. It even is possible for a control station to revert to just a voice channel if the need was there. What is missing is an actual controller and its functionality. So there is no priority cue and also no way to disable a radio among other things.
Hooking up the different repeaters together consists of only a coaxial Ethernet jumper cable. Programming is done with the standard Quantar RSS.
Nand.

I would say the new IR system will not be a stand-alone SmartNet system of it's own, but rather a linked site in the overall SmartZone system. So, no patching or anything like that required.tfr501 wrote:I have a OLD type II system that needs to be replaced. I have another agency that wants to install a 4.1 SmartZone site where I'm located. If the link to the Zone Controller is lost (T1 failure, ZOne Controller failure, etc) then the IR will revert to "site trunking" mode. The radios on that site will continue to work as normal, but the audio will only be local to that site, not broadcast over the entire network.

Also a stand alone site only using Intellirepeaters (without a local controller) does not have any unit validation. All units are valid on the system.
In a SmartZone system the unit validation process is done by at the master site. If the site link is lost and the site goes to site trunking, all ID's are valid. This would be a major reason not to use Intellirepeaters alone as a stand alone system.
I expect that they are proposing that you upgrade to Intellirepeaters and tie it back to the main SmartZone system. They would give you access to that site alone (or possibly more sites), and would allow users from other sites to use your sites (if allowed).
