Spectra Transmit problem

Post by BikerScout »

Hi everyone. Well I finally got myself a Spectra Hi Power VHF radio. The radio powered up good and I took a drive to the radio shop to have it programmed. The first oddity I noticed was it would not power up with a hkn4356B calbe but would with a hkn4356A cable. The second was after it was programmed and I got it home the radio will not transmit. It will do everything else fine except transmit. When I key it up the radio will cycle off then back on. I took it back to the radio shop and they noticed it would only power on with a hkn4356b cable I had when the radio was plugged into the rib. Unplug the rib the radio goes off. The other cable I had was a A version and it would work fine, just no transmit. I was going to try a motorcycle cable but want to ask the group first.
What could be causing the the transmit problem? The guys at the shop where busy and could only program it for me. No time to help me trouble shoot.

I just realized that the hkn4356b works. one of my connectors came off. So I only have a transmit problem.

Problem Solved! You need more than a 25 Amo PS when powering a Hi-Pwr Spectra. :D
Now, Back to our regularly scheduled program.

I agree that radio power down/power up cycling in response to the PTT is usually caused by a voltage sag, which is in turn usually the result of an inadequate power supply. However, i specify 50A for high power Spectras; I wouldn't trust a 25A supply to hold voltage.
