Why so much obsessive-ness with MODAT. You'd think Afro's and bell-bottoms were the latest craze too. I like the sound to my ear, if you knoew it's effiency level you would sing a different tune. I wouldn't drive a gullwing mercedes in a modern GT race. I guess what it stood for is more important than what it is or what it can do. Thats why I like it, although I wouldnt buy a radio of $1000 or more to achieve it. Think of this while you play with your LAPD AS II/III: You could have 802.11g router sending much more information over an RF carrier BOTH directions for 50$. Why spend all of your precious loot trying to achieve a sound that has very little function if no function at all since you know it is nearly impossible to find a decoder.

I would look at it but I wouldn't drive it. If I had (2) I would drive (1) Do you get my point though that a car like that is more about what it stood for then performance compared to todays sports/grand tourers. It is about legacy, just like Modat is today, about legacy. I can sure as hell tell you it's not a high performance air interface for today. Modat on an Astro Saber or XTS3000 is like putting gullwing/lamborghini doors on a NSX.

Afros are BACK
Blame LAPD for MODAT. THey were the last major user of the signalling technology and required it in their original VSELP and later astro saber purchases from Motorola.
Only reason MODAT came back from the dead was its inclusion in the LAPD flashcode at which point the cool geek factor took over....
What's next? MDC600 on XTL5000's?
