We have a XTL 5000 VHF (free from our great state) that is just sitting around our FH. Would it be possible to connect our Zetron Model 5 paging encoder into the XTL so it could be used as a base radio?
I was told by a local radio shop that it would not be possible, but then again, it is currently connected to a MITREK base station. This is also the same radio shop that says the CPS for the XTLs is not even made yet by Motorola.

Anyway. If you have a manual for the Model 5 it should have the diagram and key to the wiring in it. While not being totally familiar with the XTL series just yet, I am assuming the dashmount radios have the same or similar 15pin rear connector. If I am wrong I'll go sit in my corner. But anyway. you should be able to hook PTT, Ground, and Audio in through whatever accesory connector is available.

It's a funky looking 25-pin connector, not like the DB15 style of the Spectra/Astro Spectra series.
The problem you may run into...there is only an "aux mic" input on pin 23, there is no "flat" tx input such as you can find on the Maxtrac/GM/CDM series radios. What this means is you'll likely find the lower frequency paging tones (say below 450Hz or so) become attenuated or distorted due to the mic filtering on that input. Higher tones shouldn't be a problem.
