Hello all,
My first post here, and G'day from down under, I have been reading thru posts here and enjoying myself a lot, Im relatively new to the whole Astro thing, but enjoying myself a lot....
I just read the newbies astro sticky, and have a question arising out of:
If you have a astro sbaer with an old firmware / dsp verison, is there anyway to upgrade it? ie by pulling bits out of a AS I or by re programming etc?I have one ASIII tthat does all the stuff i like (ASTRO 25, omnilink etc) and one that is just dead boring R03.02.01, DSP I05.00.18, and this one will not xmit digital, well, it transmits something that sounds like digital, but the other saber cannot hear it??? So, If anyone can point me to a thread cause im sure this has all been coverd a load of times before now, I would be much obliged..

ASIII firmware / DSP upgrade?

Your older astro saber R3/DSP 5.00.18 is probably VSELP digital, and is not IMBE, which would explain why your hearing "digital" style modulation, however, your not actually hearing anything out of the other radio. VSELP is an older protocol that was used for digital - you should be able to search through the forum to find information on it if your more curious about it.
The shortest answer to your question about upgading it:
You need to either a) try and buy a flashkit from Motorola that will upgrade your firmware. b) Depot the radio (sadly, Astro Sabers no longer have support, so you can't do option b. c) purchase a new Vocoder off of ebay or here and simply plug and play (after retuning of course, and making sure it's the right band for the radio...)
Those are just about the only ways you can go about getting the upgrade done.

VSELP
flash and upgade
Those should keep you busy for a while

Yes - if you found another older "compatable" vselp radio - yeah, you should be all set.
If you look at the newbie guide - i think it says what host/dsp requirements there are for IMBE - so if you stick with stuff below that - you should be all good.

Ok cool Alex, yeah, i finally found this board but it was a little late, i had already stuck myslef with the old version radio, oh well, i think it might just be easier to use it for conventional analog duties, and i will procure myself a later version unit for digital stuff..... At least now i know what version to look for!
Thanks
