Saber Questions (Was Problems with NTN4734B)
I recently bought a Saber from a friend, and a charger from eBay. The saber had a pretty new NTN7014A 980mAh Ni-MH short battery.
I put the battery in the charger, and it charged for about an hour, then it got hot, and the charger also got hot. The charger's light went from Charge to Stand-By, as well.
The radio worked fine on the battery eliminator I have. The battery worked fine with my friend's old charger. And in the short time it charged, it did hold enough of a charge to let me recieve and transmit fine.
Still, the heating up worries me. I don't know a lot about Motorola radios or equipment, but I've been reading. Sorry if this is a dumb newbie question.
I left it in for a while, and the charger light up 'fully charged'. I played around with it for a little while, and after a few minutes, when I keyed it, the LED would flicker and the PTT tone would not be constant pitch. This happened with the battery eliminator once, but then stopped. I have no idea what is doing this.
Thanks.

charger/battery question...
I have run the 7014 short batteries for a long time in 4734 chargers with no
problems whatsoever. I suspect the battery that you were using had a shorted
cell.

same question
HI all. I was just going to post a question about the NTN4734B charger. I bought a used system saber III radio with a used battery, then a used charger and then an aftermarket(China) nicad battery. I found the battery to get real warm when charging, putting it into the flashing charge mode that has the slash running through the battery icon. I take the battery out of the charger for a little while and let it cool off, then start over. Finally it will charge up, maybe I should leave it in the charger till it's done. I just bought an OEM moto battery (NICAD) and will see what that does. Not sure what the flashing battery icon is on the charger, must be a bad battery signal?? Thanks for any replies.

The flashing slash battery is a fail. Most likley the battery is bad or shorted. The first thing is the battery overheating. There are alot of crappy aftermarket batteries out there.. Stick with a OEM or a good aftermarket . Ive had good luck with alexander.
I bought a batteries america Saber battery at a hamfest.. What a piece of.... I followed the standard charging routine. It barely lasts 6 hours on recieve.
