retard XTS3000 question

I have a factory XTS3000 model II 800, basic H38 flash. We only use one digital system and rarely at that (events), most of the time the radio stays on analog. So here goes: it just doesn't have nearly as good RX sensitivity on analog as my 10 year old MTS2000. I've had it benched at our MSS, and it passed with flying colors, no problems.

I am not a big Astro guy so I am gonna ask is this just how the newer radios are when used on analog? Atlanta Fire has some XTS5000's and they sound good (even better than my MTS) but then again the only time we've used them was the new year's eve event we worked with the city and I was right under a primesite so I guess this isn't a fair comparison.

Dont get me wrong, I like my XTS3000, I just notice quite a difference in side-by-side comparison just listening to the same signal on both.

most of my complaints about the xts 3000 are related more to the audio QUALITY and VOLUME rather than the actual Rx performance.

I find that compared to both an XTS 5000 and any analog radio, I have to turn the 3k volume up higher to receive the same quality and "punch"...but actual unsquelch on rx is the same.

There is a remote chance this is due to how your radio is set up in CPS. There are several options in there that affect how your radio volume is processed.... i'm sure someone here is more familiar that I with the 3k CPS settings.... I have never done a full setup of a 3k in CPS....only 5k.

there is even a more remote possibility that this could be related to your DSP firmware revision. Remember that in a digital radio, EVERYTHING goes through the DSP chip and is affected by the firmware/processing of that DSP. What is your DSP revision?

Radio is f.w 7.00.01, DSP version is N07.03.06

Come to think of it, maybe it is more of an audio quality issue. On digitial, it does very well, though you DO have to turn the volume up considerably and audio levels can vary. I find myself "riding" the volume control more than I do when on an analog system.

i think you will find that if you upgrade your radio to DSP 8.0x.xx - you will find the audio quality much more to your liking.

there are some audio changes that are only supported by dsp 8 (namely ... memory here... Auto AGC or something...) that make the 3k sound like a new radio.

I will second that.

I just went from DSP 6 to DSP 8 and the difference in audio quality was noticable immediately.

Correct. With DSP 8, change the ACG to on, all vaules to 0 (zero) with total vaule to +6. This was covered in an SRN some time ago, and works really well.

hopefully my MSS can do this and I won't have to send it into the depot. Will call them in the morning. Thanks for the info, I figured it was something simple. I played with a friends' XTS3000 model III and he has DSP ver 8 and his does sound much better, more natural than mine, on the same system/mode.
