Quantar/ASTRO-TAC 3000 Announcement

Motorola is aware that the Quantar/ASTRO-TAC Radio Service Software (RVN5002) has not been made available for programming purposes yet. For this reason, Motorola is enabling the current RSS software to be downloaded from Motorola Online (MOL) http://businessonline.motorola.com to alleviate the immediate customer demand.

I will wait for at least the second revision.
A major rewrite like this is bound to have some issues with it.

My buddy in Bermuda rang me the other day asking what version I had.
He said he was getting "codeplug to new" error on a new quantar.
I wondered if they were now shipping the windows version with new stations, but I guess that is still limited to P25 stations. He just needs the new version.

I did - 14.00.04 - and I found it not worth using.

Nothing new.

Very slow to read station. Slow updates on real time parameters. If you try to set the station time with it, it SHOWS you the PC time, and makes you re-enter it before sending it. It only read the station status page once per software run.

But, the best part! (this is a warning!) It now supposedly has the capability to download firmware to the station via the serial port. It starts, puts the station in download mode, starts the download to the station, and uh-oh! up comes an error window that "The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection." I'm direct connected, not via the modem. After multiple tries of this, it managed to erase the firmware. You would either need to have the stuff you need for an ethernet connection to it, AND had previously set the I/P address on the station, or a prom burner, and the flash chip images (that's me) to recover. Beyond that, I have not messed with it extensively, but I'm sure there's other issues.

BTW: If you do not have the firmware files, and the SID keys, it WILL erase the firmware if you push the erase button, or try starting a download even though it says it can't find the files. You are then in trouble.

I run 12.60 under XP, and have no problems. There's nothing new here other than fw. ver. 14 support.

Thanks for the updates, I'll tell my techs to stick with the previous version.
