Astro Trunk System Question

Within the next year. The Naval Base where i work will be installing a UHF Astro Trunk System.

I work at a tennant command that has its own small dispatch center and a larger EOC to meet NRC requirements.

Currently the dispatch room has one radio in it that is used to monitor and dispatch our security guards. We have about 7 authorized channels that other depts use.

I guess i am just curious as to how i should start planning to make both our EOC and our Dispatch room more functional.

Am i correct in assuming that i will need one radio per channel that will hook up to a remote console inside both of these locations (EOC and Dispatch)?

If so, i can see that this could be a very expensive venture since its not like i can order up some maxtrac's to do this job like back in the old days.

I already have. They wanted me to get a bunch of ham radio's mars mod'ed for my use. lol

Depends what you mean by 'console'. You can use Astro Spectra consolettes (or I guess it would be the XTL5000 consolette at this point) and control them with MC3000 remotes, which would allow you to have multiple channels, scan, etc...basically whatever you could do with a Spectra right in front of you.

I think I've seen some posts where similar functionality can be had by hooking the consolette to a Centracom system, but don't know anything about that set-up. Normally, you are correct in thinking you need a radio for each individual channel/talk group.

I am told that that there is a TRC option for the XTL consolette, so that for audio and Tx control, you can control it via an ordinary BIM card. I am also told that you can steer up to 7 of the programmed channels, either by TRC or by Aux outputs pulling binary pins. This is actually a project on my list, but it won't be completed until sometime this summer.

I guess the answer to part of your question may depend on
what importance you place on the "other" channels that you
monitor at this time. You could get 2 radios. Use one for your
primary operations channel and use the other to scan the
other talkgroups that you may need to listen to and ocasionally
talk on.

You could set up the priority on the scan of the second radio to
pick the most important talkgroup and let the others fall where
the traffic takes the scan mode.

If the exact demands dictate 100 % monitoring all the time, belly
up to the bank and your going to have to get a radio for
each talkgroup that is important. This is regardless as to what
type of console you may be using.

Would anyone happen to have a white paper on this stuf that they have used in the past to submit the higher ups.

The place i work at likes to operate in the stone age for some reason. I am trying to get us out of the stone age in communications and bring us up to date.

any documentation would help...
