Two heads on mocom 70

Post by ki4cye »

We have a mocom70 in our station mostly to monitor but sometimes used to t/x. I have been thinking of maby adding another control head for the training room. Any advice or ideas. Thanks for any help.

motorola made a special control unit, mostly used with fire apparatus for the mocom 70. it allowed you to switch channels and showed you a green and red light, with green being for power and red for x-mit. obviously a speaker was also attached. no sure how far the unit could be mounted away from the base unit, or even how it was tapped in. as for the most part, most the engines in my department still have old low band mocoms mounted on them, were on uhf now, but we only had a speaker on the pump panel with a tapped in headset. you might want to check ebay for similar items, as for a control head itself, im sure it could be dont, why not just split the wires but double check with alex on here first he knows the mocom 70 inside and out.

I forgot to say it is only a sigle channel unit.
Im hopeing we can leave the squelch wires unhooked on the second head and it work.

My two bits worth:
Motorola used to make a remote that we called the "Gutless Wonder"
which had a speaker (with volume pad), mike and PTT switch.

These are still available by several manufacturere known as "local remote control"
You really dont want or need a full control head.

I can look up the wiring if you decide to go this way.
It sounds as if this is a mobile, a base station is very similar.

Incidently, about 35 years ago I wired up some Motorola speakers with internal pads, with mobile microphone. Probably was a Motrac Consolette.

I managed to find a service manual. It looks like I can leave pin 14 (squelch line) on the second head and the four chanell select wires unhooked (cant remember wire # right off) just incase we put in a multi chanell unit and it will work fine.
The only reason we want to use a standard head is because we already have one. Thanks for all help. Almost forgot yes it is a mobile

My two bits worth:

You will find that the volume control, on-off switch will also be inop as well as the squelch, and channel selection.

The power on as well as PTT lamps will work, assuming you provide A+ to the head.

The control head will give you a place to plug in the mike and speaker.

I think in that case a speaker with mobile mike and volume pad is the way to go. Thanks.
