Advisor Elite Contrast Problem

No matter how many times I reprogram the pager, the contrast goes completely dark after pressing the read button when trying to read a page or to set the time and date. When the pager home screen times out and it reverts back to standby mode, then the contrast goes back to normal. I've reprogrammed it with various contrast level settings.

Any idea what's wrong?

Dying pager. Advisor Elites, in particular the displays, are quite prone to failure.
