Hi,
I searched the boards, but couldn't find anything related to my question.
How many characters can I have in the channel label in a Saber III?

Should be the same as a Saber II, 5 digits. That is unless you program the radio as channels only with no zones, then that frees up display room for longer names, but limits you to a 12ch radio.
Duct tape is like the force, it has a dark side and a light side and it holds the universe together.

S3 alpha display setup
Zone and channel operation:
1. First three alphas for zone; applies to all 12 channels in the zone.
2. Last five alphas for channel; applies to each individual channel
Channel only operation:
1. Gives you eight alphas per channel, but you must access the
individual channel via the keypad which is a pain. I've never
handled an S2 or S3 that was set up this way, though I did set one
up myself once just for the hell of it. It's really clunky. Much easier
to have the zone label which tips you off as to what group you're close
to instead of having to either step through many channels or, if you're
lucky, remembering exactly that channel 066 (the keypad entry) is.
And a 48, 72, or 120 channel Saber stays at those numbers regardless of which
type of setup you have.

The alternative that works well, depending on how you like to label...
Use the first 3 zone charaters as part of the channel name...
For instance...
ZONE name
POL
Channel name
ICE 1
Display shows
POLICE 1
8 character displays are a PITA, but can work.
