External PL for Maxtrac/Radius?

Post by SmilnDon »

A Moto Tech told me he use to know of an external PL encoder/Decoder for the maxtrac/Radius line of mobile radios. Has anyone ever heard of this and if so, what are they and where can I find one?

I ask because I have a need to be able to change PL tones on the fly without having to get out the programmer.

Addon PL encoders are available from at least two companies: Midian Electronics and Communications Specialists. On-the-fly PL decoding boards are also available from at least one of the two companies I mentioned above; however, both the encoder and decoder would have to be hardwired into the logic board circuitry if you expect to retain the normal functions of the radio as it is now.

I used the CommSpec boards for the same type of application. I did have a problem of gating the Encode so it would not modulate the receive as the VCO is the same.

CommSpec used to make a Encoder that had all 32 tones, with a 32 position rotory switch.

I still run the CSI Decoder display unit that reads PL, DPL and DTMF.

Very handy for testing.
