HT1550LS VHF garbled receive

Any typical problems to look out for when troubleshooting this? It almost seems like it only affects strong signals. Distant mobiles and portables sound fine but local base sounds muffled/over deviated.
Look, it's not in my nature to be mysterious. But I can't talk about it and I can't talk about why.

check your channel spacing, if you have it set for narrow band and it's not a narrow signal it will sound funny.
