Does anyone know of the proper procedure in opening a Astro Saber AVA without damaging the two clamshell covers ?

SVA/AVA opening...and closing!
Yes, give it a good whack with a mallet. It will come apart because
the top and bottom halves are made to slide together, or apart as
the case may be.
What's more fun is getting them back together, which is also the
reason that those of us who have "been there" try not to take them
apart to start with.
If you do take it apart take careful note of where all the shiny metal
parts are located because they tend to fall out if you're not careful.
