MTS2000 FLEX

Post by LT5BTFD »

I HAVE A MTS2000 TOP DISPLAY HIGH BAND VHF MODEL. THE TOP DISPLAY STOPPED WORKING AND I WAS NOT RECEIVING ANY AUDIO FROM THE SPEAKER. I OPENED UP THE RADIO THINKING THAT THE FLEX MAY HAVE CAME LOOSE ONLY TO FIND THAT THERE WAS A SMALL TEAR IN THE FLEX. I TOOK THE RADIO TO MY AUTHORIZED MOTOROLA DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD BE $175-325 TO FIX THE FLEX! THIS ESTIMATE SEEMS JUST A LITTLE ON THE HIGH END. IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVES? DOES ANYONE KNOW APROX. HOW MUCH THE FLEX IS OR HOW HARD TEY ARE TO INSTALL? THANKS

LT5BTFD,
I hate to mention this on Batlabs but if you do a search over on E-bay for mts2000 you'll find that someone(not my auction) has a brand new top display case with all the electronics for $129.00 Recasing the radio is a walk in the park I can even do it.

That's pretty much the 'size' of it...simple and you get a new case as well.

All you need to do is remove the speaker clip if the refurb kit does not have one, and install it in the new case...all connections are complete except for the one end of the ribbon flex that fits in the header and then locked down.

From start to finish, you should have a running radio in under 5 minutes.

Slip the old cover off, remove the flex.....replace with the new cover and reattach the flex and *POOF* you are back in business!

NO soldering or replacement of components, but you 'MAY' have to retrofit the side buttons/PTT in the new case as many refurb kits are of the 'some assembly required' approach.

You're getting screwed by the dealer. The Canadian suggested retail price for the flex is $27.60. It should only take the shop 1/2 hour maximum to change the flex. So, unless the shop has a 2-hour minimum charge or something like that, their price is way out in left field.

No trees were harmed in the posting of this message...however an extraordinarily large number of electrons were horribly inconvenienced.
