Systems Saber question

Never played much with Sabers, but one of the guys at my FD came to me with his Systems Saber 3 VHF. The display reads ERROR 01 upon power up... then the display just cycles through from that ERROR 01 to the zone and chan text, then it displays "talk around", then it starts the cycle all over again with the ERROR 01. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on with this thing? Any help would be great.

create a new codeplug with just 1 frequency in it and try to write it to the radio and see if it goes away.

Typical finicky Sabers, especially the systems models.

Error 0/1 is a checksum error and a reprogram with good codeplug data 'should' eliminate this problem, and if not, the board may be defective.

As a side note, you can NOT swap regular Saber shields/memory with any Systems Saber, they are not alike and will not work, the systems models have an EPROM on the board that is masked with trunking data, the regular Sabers do not have this ability and therefore, will not work.

Use the radio's tuning data only when programming (F5), using F2 will reset the values to the RSS base values.

Thanks for your quick replys guys. I'm going to try creating a "good" codeplug for this unit and dump it back in keeping the radio's tuning values intact. I'll see if that clears it up.

Ok, so I created a good working codeplug for the radio. I dumped it in and the error 01 wen't away, and it's working fine except one problem. I now have no audio out of the speaker, and no keypad beeps either which I did have before. The radio has good TX and RX, just no audio. I even tried making sure all of the flex plugs for the speaker and display are plugged in and nice and tight..... Still nothing.

Any ideas??

Had a systems saber once that had the minimum audio level in the alignment screen set to 255, so you wouldn't have any audio at all unless you cranked the audio all the way up to max. Might check that out.

When listening on another radio, do you hear your systems saber's TX audio?

Creating a Saber codeplug from a dead start can be a huge
pain. When you go to load in the "new" setup, try keeping
the tuning values stored in the radio. If it still messes up THEN
you can go for the tuning values in the new codeplug, which
you may or may not have set up properly. I was once sent a
Saber 3 Securenet that had been completely blanked and it
took me a good while to get it set up properly. It was my first
Securenet so I had no old codeplug already made up to dump
into the radio to get it cooking.

Once again, thanks for all the info guys. I do hear the systems saber's TX on other radios when I key it up, and it comes through very clear. I guess since everything is working like it should except for the audio, and since I did start from scratch with a new plug, I'm going to check the tuning area of the radio. I'll see how this goes, maybe I'll come across something.

On Systems models, the service alignment is very critical.

Since the alignment area is probably the touchiest area, that section should be scrutinized the closest as well.

Just the conventional portion of the alignment is detailed as to what's adjusted/tuned and affects what in the other menu areas, such as signalling, audio, message/status encode/decode...and the list goes on.

One setting affects other alignment points in the service and operation of Systems models to a greater degree than the standard Sabers.

VCO modulation settings provides the TX audio level, and the Reference modulation is sampled by the audio circuits as well as the receiver and transmitter et al...

Good thing the ref. mod. does not have to be adjusted upwards often, or at all for the most part, so the default setting should be more than adequate.
