HT Antennas - how can you tell the difference

Post by gdsteele »

I have two HT1250s(vhf and uhf) with two different antennas on them. One is thick and is about 5 1/2" long from the base to the start of the tip. The other is thin and is 6" from the base to the start of the tip. Neither one is marked with a color, number, or anything except /\/\otorola. I've had the antennas off a couple of times but now I'm not entirely sure if I have the right antenna on the right radio. They seem to work ok, but I just want to be sure.

The thicker one is VHF, thinner is UHF.

What radios do you own?: XTS2500/5000, XPR7550/5550

Generally, VHF antennas are a constant width, but UHF antennas taper off at the top. I suppose this isn't a hard-and-fast rule, but, short of stubby antennas, I'm yet to see someone not follow this convention.
