my vhf ht1550 was about $630 new in the box about 6 months ago, uhf is around the same price. guys on ebay usually want a rediculous amount for used ones, usually more than what you can get a new one for.

Where did you find a VHF new for $630? I understand that to be just about the dealer cost.

I got a quote for a new VHF HT1550-XLS with the battery that lets you field program the radio for about $725......Utah Communications....but they will quote you higher about $850 plus.....he gave me a special disaster communications deal, because a S & R team ordered about 20, and he still had the quote available to give......BUT, I figured for what I need it for (HAM 2 meter/County Disaster Comms.) my nice Mint all original JT1000 does the job.....better RX and speaker volume too....

it came directly from motorola. i don't think the field programming battery is worth the extra cost. it's limited on what you can program, the laptop is easier.

ya...but it makes the 1550 into a new JT1000 basically? I heard it does more on the fpp side then a JT will do? but you cant do zones etc. thru the fpp....I think the fpp XTS5000 will do almost everything....not sure exactly, maybe someone here knows? Also, does the XTS5000 fpp need any sort of battery/key to fpp? or is it just enabled thru the CPS? David KD6RFS

the field programming is limited on the 1550 and not worth the extra money for the battery if you want my opinion. you can only edit basic features. other than the programing battery all you have to do is enable it with the cps.

The field programmable battery is only $30 extra when you buy it as an upgrade when ordering the radio. It allows you to change the TX and RX frequencies along with TX and RX PL / DCS as long as edit has been checked in that channel personality. I keep a few dummy personalities programmed in mine incase I have to program a customers frequency in to test while out on the road or add a ham repeater :) when out of town.

This allows minor changes while out in the field but programming it with the CPS is the way to go.

:Edit minor mistake:

You do realize that you got dealer pricing on that radio and that Joe Schmo off the street won't ever see a price like this, right?
