Archive vs S-Record

Whats the difference between archive and s-record? I've read various posts which states to backup the radio's S-Record. But in Batlab's MTSX series page, it says to backup the radio's Archive.

Is Archive and S-Record basically the same thing? If I have a S-Record of my radio, do I still need to make a backup of the Archive?

If they are the same, my guess is that Archive is just the binary form of S-record?

It is confusing, as the terms are used by many as if they are interchangeable...which they somewhat are but not completely.

An S-record is a raw binary image of the radio's codeplug. S-records can only be read/saved by Motorola LAB or Depot versions of RSS.

An archive contains most, but not quite all of the same information, and is saved in a format the regular RSS recognizes.

You can use a regular archive, or an S-record, and in conjunction with the LAB RSS, force it into another radio to effectively change it.

HOWEVER, if you have an MTS2000 which has been toolproofed, you MUST use the original S-record from that radio in order to restore it. Trying to use a regular codeplug cannot recover it. That's the biggest difference.

So my assumption is that a S-record backup of a radio is of more importantance than an Archive backup?

Think of an S record as a "ghost" of a computer hard drive.

Once applied to another hard drive it's a mirror image of what it was.

The same thing applies to the radio.
