The functions of the buttons/switches are programmable so it is hard to say definitively how yours may be programmed. It also depends on which model HT1000 you have. What is the last part of the model number (i.e. AN, BN, DN, etc)?
Some parts of the manual are on the Motorola Accespoint web site (http://accesssecure.mot.com/accesspoint)

Yes, you would have to read the codeplug out of the radio using the RSS and RIB to know for sure how your buttons are programmed.
As for the major differences between AN and BN, the only ones I know are that the BN has more programming options for the buttons and switches.
I believe the default functions for the side buttons are:
Top button (green) - Select
middle button - RAT (repeater access tone)
bottom button - Monitor
The only way to be sure is to read the codeplug. Did you check the manual at the Motorola web site?
I am not sure what you mean about connecting two radios together... are you referring to cloning?
