RSS Can't Read SM50 Using V8.00

Hello, stuck on another one....I have tried two computers, one 486 and a Pentium 75 (Which I use most of the time w/RSS) and still can't seem to read the codeplug. I have an older Radius mobile that reads and writes fine. It keeps saying the radio isn't turned on. The pins are all perfectly straight and clean. I also tried to re-solder the RJ-45 jack just in case of a cracked solder joint. The radio is UHF and in "perfect" condition. Two channel. It transmits and receives on it's current settings. One thing I did notice is if the RIB and cable are connected to the SM50 for a few minutes it will start to make a tone out of the speaker on radio. Leaving the plug out and the radio on with nothing in the mic jack it stays quiet. The radio's buttons all function as they should.

Wierd RSS doesn't see the SM50 but the older Radius it does.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Check the battery in the RIB. Use an AC adapter if yours can do that.

Usually if the programming line between the radio and the RIB is low when the RIB goes to talk to the radio, it'll assume the radio isn't powered up. Something could be dragging it low, or it could have been destroyed by a previous owner. Or some component in your RIB could be on the edge of its tolerance value and not able to pull the programming line.

Try another RIB. Some are more compatible than others.

Bob is right on here, Check the pgm line with just the radio turned on and the PGM cable plugged in the mic jack. The DB25 end disconnected from the RIB. Look for 5 volts on the BUSS+ line, pin 15 in the DB25 connector.

Battery was at 8.35 volts. Put it on a wall-wort and now it is running at 9 volts. Same thing. Tried one of my other generic ribs. No luck. Will try the voltage check today.

Ok, found 4.3 volts between pins 1 and 15. I also used 15 and chasis ground to be sure....same thing. These measurements were with no load, or basically just the wires out of the RJ45 mic jack.

Looks like the radio is running a little low.....thoughts?

If you're using an RSS package with the version 8.00.00, then you're using the wrong one. The correct RSS package is HVN9007, latest version is 5.00.00.

Ok, this tells you that the data line in the radio is not shorted to ground, and should work. 4.3 volts is OK.

WAVTAR hit the nail on the head on this one....didn't know why I didn't look at the model number....I was just going off Radius assuming it covered the whole line.... Not... I found SM50. I also appear to have version one. It does read and write with no problems!
