GP68 HOT on transmit

Hi everyone,

I'm a new UHF GP68 owner. The back of this particular unit gets very hot during transmit, after about 30sec. or so of transmitting. during a conversation it will heat quite hot, even on low power.

If it helps, I'm using an aftermarket large battery but the labels are gone from the battery so I don't know the capacity or who made it.

Anyone else experience this GP68 xmit heat problem? Thanks........

Update: I just tried it with a stock PMNN4001C battery, same result.....

I just got my '68 TODAY (uhf) and noticed the same thing, on the same "Stock" battery as you had described. I wouldn't worry about it, I think they made that back portion metal so it disipates heat faster. I'm only using it on 440 ham, but I don't think that makes a difference.

I've owned a number of different types of Motorola HTs and
they all get at least warm when transmitting. I had two GP68s
and my recollection is that they tended to get REALLY hot for
some unknown reason, probably just a design thing (e.g.,
proximity of final amp to inside back of case, or running the
amp transistor at its limit, etc.???).

I never had any problem with my 68s even though they
did run hot.

Ok thanks guys. I suppose that I can use the extra heat to warm my hands this winter .......

Another but unrelated question: Was the AP73 marketed AS a ham radio? In the USA? Reason I'm asking is I don't recall ever seeing any ads for it anywhere.......

I've been told this:

AP = Amateur Product

73 = IE like " 73's " like you hear in ham radio


Yes it was for US ham, just the radio's bandsplit was limited to ham.
