MTX838/MTS2000 - Whats the Difference?

MTX838/MTS2000 - Whats the Difference?

I have heard that the 838 is the export version of the 2000, but what is different between these two radios?

the mtx 838 has a "closed" controller - not upgradeable via flashport


the mts 2000 has an "open" controller - and can have features (and firmware) upgraded via flashport upgrades.


other than that, no major difference - there are some tighter specs for canadian units....that's about it.

MTX838 was the export version of the MTX8000 series.
The MTX2000 can also have encryption whreas the 838 can't (well the 800Mhz trunking ones anyway)

The VHF and UHF ones don't either - same controller.

It began like that with the early models but as time went on the whole series ended up with same board.

My two 838s are from around 1999 and 1995, with what looks like the same controller.
