Stand alone IMBE vocoder?

Post by mancow »

What's the general consensus? Would it be a reasonable task to make an Astro vocoder sustain itself outside the radio?

I was looking at some schematics lately and it appears that all of the required items reside on the board (astro saber vocoder).

If one could be programmed as CSQ and fed a base band signal from another receiver would it work?

doesn't AOR build this for their scanners already?

http://www.aoruk.com/direct/ard25.htm

the PITA with using a vocoder is

- getting power to it
- getting the data outta into it
- getting the data outta it

I started looking into it and the ABACUS IC would be a big problem I think since it resides on the RF deck.

I saw the AOR too and that's what got me curious about the moto parts.

Oh well....

I'd be fairly certain that the vocon pulled out of a radio won't want to play unless it's convinced it is in a working radio, i.e. it gets to talk to whichever parts it initialises on boot etc.

Well that's kind of what I thought but there just has to be more to it. It's just to simple... right?

Here's where I get confused, vocoder vs. IMBE chip.

Can you help me understand the difference? Am I right that the ABACUS IC that resides on the RF deck is the functional equivalent of the 4 level you mentioned? If so, then the 4 level would take care of that issue.

I see that there's a SLIC chip that handles the data from there and then injects it into the IMBE chip and vice versa.

I was always of the impression that the IMBE chip did everything. I thought that once the signal was converted to digital by way of the 4 level or whatever then it was taken directly to the IMBE chip and out comes analog. However, it appears there's that SLIC chip in between there that does some additional formatting or conversion.

syntrx,

I swear you posted something about a 4 level and such but when I hit reply it was all different. Did you go back and edit it? :)

Or, am I imagining things?
