MOL & Questions regarding the average consumer

Out of curiousity I called Motorola today to inquire about a few things.

One of these later topics was in regards to purchasing some CPS.

The lady that I spoke to gave me the list price on what I was seeking and told me that I would have to go to Motorola's Business Online website to register, after of course I purchased something, etc.....

I was a little confused by the end of it, and the CSR seemed pretty rushed when speaking to me.

Bottom line at what I am trying to drive at. What does it take for John "Q" Public to purchase CPS, parts, etc.... from Motorola directly? Do you go thru the normal Q & A process, and pay them, etc.... or do you need to be a licsensed business, etc.......

My CPS inquiry was in regards to some XTS/AS CPS. I am looking at a Astro Spectra mobile and some other XTS radio's and will be needing CPS to program them, and figured if I was going to plunge that I might as well see what impact it would have on my wallet.

Thoughts, opinions, advice, etc.................?

If you're in an area that is not over loaded with that CPS, then you'll be fine. Being in the States is a plus.

I spent several days on the phone with them because I was out of the U.S. at the time and they couldn't get it through their heads that I was an American... They made me do it the old fashioned way by signing the CPS agreement in red ink and mailing it to them. I didn't get my MOL account until AFTER I was sent the hard copy of the CPS.

Long story short - Yes, you can buy CPS from them, but you have to play their game.

I just recently got the MOL account as well. I have seen the stories on here that many people have been turned down for an account and to buy CPS. I found it to be very, very easy when I did it. I just filled out the questions online sent it back to them and the next day I was granted access to it. But YMMV

Hah..... look for a post from me about a year ago. I basically lined out the process.

What it comes down to is that MOL hates you.

You are not a millionare. You are not working a huge contract. Therefore, you are not worth their time.

It's possible to get it done but it takes about 10 phone calls and an assload of patience. Then it's still a ****fight because there is no logic to what you will or will not have access to.

that's pretty much the case. I found that dealing with Kenwood has been ten times easier and they don't require you to sign an EULA to sell you software. Their prices are a hell of alot more reasonable too.

Bottom line is Motorola doesn't want any end user to program their radios. It's all about the money, they'd much rather you go to your frieldnly MSS who charges 55 bucks and up everytime you want to change something in your radio.
