Narrowband vs Wideband

Post by NSPD »

This may be a stupid question, but I figured I would ask you guys anyway...

I would like to use a UHF Saber to communicate with some CLS radios that are operating on narrowband channels (ex 466.1125). I know the saber won't do narrowband, but should accept that frequency in wideband mode. The range i'll be using them in is just 3000 feet or so, would that theoretically work ok?

The audio from the narrowband transmitter will sound low to the Saber, and the transmit audio from the Saber will be distorted in the narrow receiver. It may in fact cut out while overdeviating.

It might work but it won't be pleasant overall.

I don't think sabers will do narrowband.. in general.. However there are a few on the board here who say they can use 12.5

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will try it and if it doesn't work i'll use the radio for receive-only.

I think you guys are getting confused with frequency splits and emissions. Two different things.

Actually, from the SABER end, the audio from the CLS will sound like it's "Pumping", or when you have a Wairs on AGC mode. When the CLS picks up your saber, you will need to tallk close to the mic at a constant audio deviation from you.

I have both the Astro Saber and a couple of CLS radios and this is how I use them.
