Help!!! I kill my trunking MaxTrac!

Hi all!

I kill my Maxtrac

It has been D45MQA5GB5AK (Type I / 2 System / 2 Subfleet) with HLF9122A board (Maxtrac 820???).

I blank his logic board with LAB RSS 05.30.00 with saving turning data.

After it I reinitialize it in the same LAB RSS as Maxtrac 50:

After it I press F3 (program with old tune data).

After process starts, I get message "Serial number does not match radio.".

Very stranger!!! Because I enter s/n correctly - I check it 10 times. And s/n has been right - I check it in my older printings from RSS, I check package and stickers - s/n is correct!

Hmmmm.... No any way - S/N is correct and I press F2 (continue with "wrong" S/N).

Radio reboots and sounds continuously low after short high beep.

I read radio with the same LAB RSS, but receive message, that codeplug checksum error and that programming with this codeplug can make radio unusable. I press F2 (agree) and write radio. "Wrong S/N" error appears and I press F2 (agree) again. Radio has been programmed, but continuously beeps low.

I try read radio with RVN4019K (R07.02.00) and receive error 59 ("Radio Code Plug Error."). I try read radio with RVN4019J (R06.01.00c) and receive error 58 ("Radio Code Plug Error.").

Alignment menu show error "Microprocessor Configuration Register Is Corrupted. Replace Logic Board Per service Manual Procedures".

I try other variants, like MaxTrac 100 and no positive result.

In some retry I blank board by my fail - after it I think that turning data was been lost... Therefor I try blank logic board with w/o saving turning data and try making this Maxtrac back to original:

Now "wrong S/N" message not appears, but S/N has been the same =)

Radio reboots and now sounds continuously low after short high beep as above.

I read radio with the same LAB RSS - radio has been read w/o errors. I can read/write codeplug from the same LAB RSS, but in F4 menu (change/view codeplug) only menu F2 exist (Radio Wide configuration). And nothing more!

I try read radio with RVN4043S (R05.01.00 and other 05.07.02) and receive error "External EEPROM checksum error", "Error 53": Trunked Code Plug Checksum Error, Consult Manual For List of Error Codes and possible solutions".

I try read radio with RVN4019J (R06.01.00c) and receive error 58 ("Radio Code Plug Error.").

I can blank and reinitialize board again and again, but I am cannot get any working radio. I try different variants in initializing board, but one result in all cases - radio sounds continuously low after short high beep.

How I can get back any working radio??? Trunking or conventional - no matter. Just working radio.

May be I doing something wrong? Or radio is completely dead?

I bring it to life!!!

I blank it and reinitialize with Trunking RSS (not LAB). When I try done it, RSS force me to load codeplug - I load it and radio has been successfully reinitialized! It works now, but I loose some tune data

All correct parameters of my radio are clear to understand, except Panel Number:

You have to change the firmware EPROM chip to make it conventional...

I try convert this radio to conventional by initializing from Conventional RSS.

I try convert to these:

Max Options | MaxTrac 100 | Reference # 6

Not successfull in all retries - RSS don't want to initialize radio as MaxTrac - Error # 30: Serial Number Does Not Match Radio. And no F2 (agree) button available here.

I also try initialize this as trunking (by using Conventional RSS).

For initialization I used all right genuine data (data identical with factory trunked radio):

May be to get trunked radio, I must use for initializing Trunked RSS (not Conventional RSS)?

It is an Eprom, not EEprom. IE under the sticker there is a window that you shine UV light into to erase it, then you have to have an eprom burner to program it. THE RADIO DOES NOT PROGRAM THIS CHIP.

I have read many posts. But everywhere info that trunked Maxtrac can be converted to conventional w/o changing chip - just by blanking LB and re-initializing.

I reading about changing chip, but I understood that it is necessary only when I build Smartnet Maxtrac. But I need in conventional Maxtrac or trunking Maxtrac, but with one or more conventional mode(s).

May be you can give me link where described my issue?

That is a trunking chip.
You have to initialize with trunking software.
Since you only have a 2ch head, you need to initialize with panel 000 and find a model that has ONE trunking and ONE conventional.
(you are trying to make it a full featured radio with the wrong front panel)
And if you don't have lab trunking RSS, I believe you will need a codeplug to put in it.

Or you can change the chip to conventional HLN5569, and you can have 2 conventional channels.

And why I need Trunking RSS? After all I can blank LB from any LAB RSS for MaxTrac. And as I have read on this forum, to make trunking radio Conventional RSS (not LAB!) required.

Max-Trac told you everything you need: you want this radio to be a conventional radio, you've gotta get conventional F/W. If you want more than two channels, you're gonna have to scrounge up a more advanced control head.

This is what you need. That trunking EPROM will NEVER do what you're trying to make it do.

To get a full functioning conventional radio, you need the above EPROM AND a full feature head. You can pick those up on Ebay as well.

I have seen a 2ch trunking maxtrac with one trunking ch, and one conventional, but it had the expanded 5-pin board. So it won't match your 16pin setup. And it may have been a special. I don't have a codeplug for what you need and it has been so long since I set up a trunking radio, I don't know if you can do it without a codeplug.
When you initialize with lab-trunking, look for a model number that is ONLY 2ch but has the most features.
There are really only 2 panel numbers to use, 000 for your 2ch, and 001 for the full featured head.
Make sure you have the emergency jumper on the back along with the speaker jumper.

If to trust MaxTrac RSS, such radio also exist - model number is the same (D45MQA5GB4_K), but "Product Line" is "Max Trk Option", what means that radio have expanded logic board/16 pin ACC connector.

I don't have a codeplug for what you need and it has been so long since I set up a trunking radio, I don't know if you can do it without a codeplug.

Are you sure that I must use Trunking LAB RSS to initialize LB?

I have two different LAB RSS:

1. First have filenames such maxtrac.xxx. Banner is: "MaxTrac Mobile, R05.30.00, LAB USE".
2. Second have filenames such maxtracs.xxx. Banner is: "RSS for the MaxTrac. Restricted to FTR Use., (R05.05.00)".

I correctly understood that 1-st is Conventional LAB RSS, but 2-nd is Trunking LAB RSS?

When I try initialize from 2-nd RSS (R05.05.00), RSS force me to load codeplug (which I doesn’t have, because I doesn't have appropriate radio to get it).

When I try initialize from 1-st RSS (R05.30.00), all works ok in first look - I can read/write radio from Conventional RSS, but radio beeps low, and I cannot read/write radio from Trunking RSS (53 error - External EEPROM Checksum Error).

There are really only 2 panel numbers to use, 000 for your 2ch, and 001 for the full featured head.

I think that I must use appropriate panel number, not dully "000". See table "Panel Numbers for Lab RSS" here http://www.batlabs.com/maxrad.html. My factory panel number coincide with this table - 050 for D45MQA5GB5_K.

But I try different panel numbers - still no luck.

You are not right.

I check "MaxTrac 800 operating manual" and find out that MaxTrac 820 has only basic head (no advanced head as calss for 820 family). Advanced head only in MaxTrac 840 family.

As I can see in RSS, few MaxTracs 820 with one conventional mode exist.

Also I see in MaxTrac 800 operating manual (on the page # 11) that "MaxTrac 820 Dual-Mode Operation" (D35MQAGB4) exist, which supports trunking and conventional. This one pictured and described with basic head. And on this basic head, signed conventional mode LED (bottom right LED).

It is mean that MaxTrac with basic head can operate in conventional. Only one mode, but it can!

It is a D45MQA5GB4, Maxtrac 820, panel 56
I don't think it will work though, it is from a 5 pin logic board with a HLN9260C eprom firmware.


Since you want to beat your radio, and it is a matter of principle, I will experiment around later and see what I can do.

I took a 2ch radio with the same logic board and eprom that you have and;
1. Blank with conventional lab RSS, F8 extended, don't save tuning.
2. exit and run lab-trunking RSS
3. load the saved file that I posted earlier
4. go into replace logic board
5. change to your serial number if you like.
(the rest of the data should be filled in for you)
6. F8 write the radio

You will need to do a full alignment on the radio (F2 replace logic board again, this time you get the alignment screen)
I notice that the bottom button (subfleet) changes the channel.

You may not need trunking-lab, but I did not try normal RSS.

re the mics, yes, GM300, radius, and others will work, NOT Mostar, unkown on Waris....

But I lost extened LB functionality - programming for ACC connector not available with this codeplug. Thinks that this is because your codeplug from basic LB radio.

High - what it mean? High power? No! Because each second Max High Sig radio has D35 model number (15W power output).
