Minitor V won't stop vibrating after being turned on

My chief has a 2 channel Minitor V (non stored voice). Whenever you turn the pager on, it starts vibrating and both the amber and red lights on top stay on. It never stops vibrating and the lights don't go off until you turn the pager off. BTW, this is his second one that doesn't work.

A little background: He got me to program the original pager. He wanted a 159.XXX frequency in one of the channels. Well, the 2 channel Minitor V's only go up to a 158.XXX frequency. It will let you program it, but an "Out of Band" warning pops up. I told him about this, but he wanted me to do it anyway. So I did, and the pager worked fine for about 1 month. Then, the squelch would come on whenever the pager was turned on. He took it to the Motorola service shop, and they sent it off. Motorola sent him a brand new pager, free of charge. The local shop did the programming this time (they put the 159.XXX frequency in, also). Well, it's 1 month later, and THIS pager has started the vibrating thing.

Could the out of band frequency be causing his pager to malfunction? (I told him that's what I think it is, but he doesn't think so...) I tried re-programming it with a frequency that is within the specified range, but it still would not quit vibrating. (maybe the damage is already done???)

More than likely its extended use in the wrong range has caused the prom inside to malfunction. I say it's already destroyed. If not the prom, then the solder joints have come out due to abuse. Open it and check out everything inside and see if the prom came lose.

I have seen some M V's do this, depot it. On the older units (3, & 4's) that was liquid damage a lot of the time. It is safe to assume not from the out of band freq.

I have a Minitor V that has been programmed - but never been used - that does the same thing. In my case, the pager is programmed for frequencies within the correct frequency range, so the should be no issue of damaging the PROM from extended use in the wrong freq range.

I haven't been real thrilled with the Minitor V for the most part. Have the programming software and it has a bunch of typos and other errors in the help file.

Which end of the squelch level adjustment makes the pager more sensitive - 1 or 5? The help file says that the squelch level goes from 1 - 10 with 8 the default. My software runs from 1 - 5, 3 is the default. It doesn't seem to be up to Motorola's usually high standards...

Check to make sure that the battery latch is latched down before you send it back, I have seen similar issues with unlatched batteries in and outside of the charger.

Squelch set at 5 is the most sensitive.
