Here's an article published back on September 1, 2000, regarding VDL TDMA Mode 3 Digital Links for aviation use. TDMA uses Time Slots for Voice and/or Data and the British Standard is 0 to 23 which equals 24 Total Time Slots.

Referencing /\/\ iDEN more commonly knowm as Nextel, the Direct Connect Dispatch Voice Traffic uses 2 TS and the Telephone Interconnect similar to Cellular Telephone Calls uses 3 TS which provides better recovered voice audio. The use of more Time Slots allows the digital signaling to handle a faster traffic rate but limits the access of users on a given RF Channel.
