What would be your choice for a P25 mobile for a fire department?
50watt?
100 watt?

We are getting some grant money, only catch, we only get $1500.00 per radio.

What can we get?

One suggestion is to see what you can get on state bid, or if its' a Homeland Security grant, what you can get through your State Point of Contact.

$1500 per radio? The only chance would be a Kenwood TK-5710... and a 50-watt deck with the most basic control head and no options would be slightly higher than $1500 at dealer cost (and you're not likely to find a dealer willing to sell for cost).

What's the 'enhanced flash'?

Any other 'issues' besides user scan? We've sold a ton of them with zero issues so far. Excellent replacement for the MCS2000, IMHO.

Is having to flash 6 dozen radios (at 20 minutes each) to make the PTT work properly an "issue"?

How about two of them failing part way through the flash proccess, and one of them not taking programming at all?
Or sending those three to depot, and in two months only one coming back - still with the same problem?

Also the CPS has a nice little habit of telling me a codeplug is corrupt when I try to open it, but if I try to open it a second time it works fine. And it doesn't always seem to realize it's connected to a radio when it really is.

I won't even go into how long it took me to figure out how to setup the programmable buttons.

if you want new radios for less than that price you're not going to get it. or at least you're not going to get motorolas. you may find some used ones but going that way you get the headaches that come with them. what if you got fewer radios and spend $2,000 or $2,200 each?

For under $1500 I don't think you'll find you have many options beyond the XTL1500.

Certainly not a Motorola, but there are other $1500 options for P25. However, my personal experience with an Icom P25 that is in this price range was not that good.

You can get ICOM full keypad portables on VHF and / or UHF for a little bit less than $1,500.00 each. These radios are true P25, submersible, great quality. Ask for GSA pricing.
