Problem Programming MTX838 B3 " NAKed Error " ?

Post by Leadenwah »

In attempting to read an MTX 838 B3 the error message: " >Request not ACKed / NAKed Error <". The com port test is OK, RIB, Cable all OK, everything else checks out, but this error message continues to prevent reading the radio. The radio beeps when the read radio key is pressed, but goes no further.

Any ideas ?

Check RIB and Radio batteries' voltages.

It wasn't a $100-ish item from a dude in South Australia, was it?

Nope, Mr. S, this was from a US source, 100% positive feedback and the radio looks very nice and clean, but thanks for the link.

I used pure DOS 6.22 on an even slower computer, all power to RIB & radio check out OK. I tried reading with/without scan, antenna and other variations.

I think Matt has a good point about checking the flex which I will do. If this is the case, the radio came at a fair price and I won't mind replacing the flex.

I wonder if the flex failure has been a common problem with these B-3's?

Thanks for the valid questions and the useful replies.

Do you have another Jedi radio you can try to read? I had a similar problem before and it was my radio to rib cable. Also make sure the battery on the radio is fully charged and a fresh 9 volt in the rib.

Try pushing and holding down the rib to radio cable where it attaches to the radio. I had this happen to me once and this solved the problem for me.

Bad cable.

Well, I'm using an AC power supply for the RIB which checks OK. I was able to read another Jedi (MTX8000) with no problem, but when trying to read a known good HT1000 I got a very different error message: " Unrecoverable Error " during reading.

I am going to try holding the cable and connector down as I can't rule that out. It well may be that the cable connector could be making intermittent connection with the connection on the side of the radio.

Thanks again for additional good ideas.

How close is the radio to the PC? I've seen that error thrown a few times when the radio is too close to the PC. RFI from the PC didn't play well with the read/write process. Just something else to consider.

I moved the radio as far as possible from the computer, power supply and potential radiation problems, but it didn't change the problem.

Now I get " Runtime Error " when trying to read another MTX838, but this is on a very old, very slow 486 laptop.

With the same cable and set up I was able to fully read an MTX8000, but I'm still getting problems with the MTX838 and on one HT1000. I've got a new flex on the way in hopes that will help.

Yeah, you've either got a couple of radios with bad flexes, or a very flakey programming cable.

The other possibility is you're using extremely old versions of RSS to do your programming...although the fact the MTX8000 & MTX838 use the same RSS would seem to preclude that...unless one of the errors is 'codeplug too new'...

I would crack open the radio and reseat both flex cables just to make certain they are both well seated and clamped into place, then try programming again.

If one works and one doesn't...something's afoul, and it's probably not the computer/RIB combo....it has to lie in the radio.

Since I consistently get a good read on the MTX8000's ( 2 of them ) and the same errors on each of the other Jedi's, I'm inclined to think it is the radios themselves.

There have been no " Codeplug Too New " messages.

I've had displays go bad when I suspected the flex rather than the display itself.

I'll reset the flexes.

Thanks again !
