I believe our cost of living is lower than CA, except for homeowners insurance where mine doubled this past year.
I'm just advertising and don't set the rates. A number of years back our
tech's were making about 20% less. They were finally brought up to a level that met most of the local shop's salaries, and with our lower cost than norm medical insurance and non-contributatory retirement where you vest in 6 years, it made the overall salary higher than the local shops.
Were not the highest but the benefits are very good, guess that's why I have been here for almost 20 years.

The busses most likely do not run late at night, so thats when the equipment is available to be worked on.
I agree that the salary is rather low for a supervisory position, and the requirements are a bit strict...
