Spectra A9 to A7 head conversion?

Post by phillipsc84 »

Just wanted to throw this out there. I have a Spectra that uses the X9000 Head which I like. However I was wondering if it's possible to switch to the A7 head? I like the look of the X9000 head but I wanted to save a little space and wanted to keep the full numeric keypad. I thought I saw somewhere how to do that But I don't remember where or how. Anyone know what to do?

When used on a Spectra It's not a X9000 head.. it's an A9, B9, or C9.. Depending on which model it is, and which firmware it has, it may be usable with an X9000 or Spectra, but not both.

Changing from an A9 to an A7 should be as easy as changing the head, and selecting the correct head in RSS. You will need to have the correct remote interconnect board and rear plastic for the A7 head to use the systems 9000 style cable, or you may be able to use the old style cable with the A7 head. Make sure you have the correct type of head (conventional or trunking) for the radio you have.

OK, I wasn't sure about the proper name for the older X9000 style head wehn used on the Spectras.

To catch things up heres the situation. I have a conventional UHF Spectra that uses the old X9000 style head. It's model HCN1063 and I can't remember the last letter. I believe C maybe. I can double check. Basicaly as I mentioned I just wanted to try and use something a little smaller (prefferably A7) to save some space.

As far as changing the head type in the RSS it seems that "normal" RSS functions (on mine at least) don't include a way to just change it. I see the "Control Head Type" listed on the screen in the RSS and it says "s9000e" but it doesn't get highlighted when going through the options. There aren't any special options installed just a basic conventional UHF radio.

Any other sugestions? Worst case I'll just squeez in the A9 head and be fine with it.

In order to use a different head on a spectra, you have to modify the internal programming of the radio. You may want to look at these links:
