I think he means the ANI signalling format ATIS. IIRC, it's the format that FDNY uses on their radios. It sounds very much like MDC.

The FDNY currently uses ASTRO signaling on analog fireground channels. The voice transmissions on fireground channels are analog, when the user dekeys the PTT the radio remodulates to P25 and sends the unit ID. One benefit is that the ID can be a 7-digit number, unlike MDC1200's 4-digit hex. This feature was specially developed for the FDNY in their XTS3500 radios. It is not a standard feature of the 3500. However, this feature is now available in all ASTRO-25 subscribers with firmware v6 or newer under the name of "Tactical Pubic Safety."

Prior to that, when they used Sabers, the signaling was MDC1200.

I am not sure what ATIS is or what it stands for, though, I'd like to know.

ATIS = Automatic Transmitter Identification System

Generic name for PTTID. The term is sometimes used in regional NPSPAC Plans, as in ATIS is permissible on 800 MHz interoperability channels.

In other words MDC PTTID would be one form of ATIS as would GE Star or Kenwood's format, etc.

ATIS the cheap and dirty way...

Post by Tom in D.C. »

The Vertex FT60R will do this, in MCW, if you program it that
way. Unfortunately it's a global feature, so I never use it since
I don't want my callsign going out on a MURS channel! Matter
of fact I don't want my callsign going out at all unless I decide
to actually say it.

Cool, Thanks. Any HT1000 or only newer Rev. D models?

Like stated, ATIS sounds almost identical to MDC. FDNY used it pre-9/11 on a lot of their radios.

Not the same thing, at all. What they are talking about here is a digitally encoded string, not a CW ID

ATIS

Post by Tom in D.C. »

ATIS is an acronym for ANY system
that automatically identifies a transmitter, no matter
how you slice it or what you call it.

Actually, in Motorola terms, ATIS is *not* "any" PTT ANI. They have a specific format called ATIS in some of their radios. It is NOT MDC1200, although it's very similar.

Perhaps we need to ask the original poster just what it is that HE means

Tom you don't have to get snotty. It's quite possible that once upon a time, I owned more MCW capable WWII surplus stuff than you've seen lately. an ARC-2 or TCS comes to mind.

My idea of any TRUE ATIS is one that IS automatic. The responders that are speaking in terms of ANI type systems are what I think of. Expecting a dispatcher to sit at a console and listen for CW, uh, excuse me, MCW id's doesn't seem very automatic to me. Some sort of encoded string that gets read out on a display of some sort, be it a CRT console or separate decoder display, is my idea of a true ATIS.

Now the question is...are we talking about unit ID signalling (all encompassing) for the new fireground accountibility option?

Tom is correct. ATIS is a stand-alone signaling format in the Visar/HT1000. It's similar to MDC1200, but it IS a DIFFERENT format.

I'll post an audio/video sample tonight (sunday)

I believe that ATIS was developed for Transit systems... Thats the only place I've ever heard it used.

I mean ATIS as in the Motorola format named "ATIS" (what FDNY used to use). Not A.T.I.S. as in "Automatic Transmitter Identification System".

If you even want to hear it you'll have to set a pre-time if its set for PRE-ID in the sig op menu. At least that was the issue with my HT1k/Visar when I dicked around with that feature becasue the burst itself is so short.
