Newbie help needed...

I am new to the board and I have a question...

I am currently trying to buy a Radius radio and I am looking at several auctions on Ebay.

The people have given me the "serial number" on the back, but I am still confused on how to read the code, I guess I'm a bit of a dummy... :oops:

Is there anyway I could get some help with this? Is there a place on the boards to post this request? I don't want to do something illegal and get thrown off the boards on my first post!!! :lol:

There is a website that has info to decode most Motorola model numbers:

But, be aware that the model number of Radius series radios only indicates the frequency band and NOT the bandsplit. It is very easy to get ripped off with a radio that will not work on your frequency if you do not know what you are buying.

I would strongly suggest you buy only from someone who can check out and program the radio for you as part of the sale.

Can you briefly explain bandsplit to me? I understand the frequency stuff, but bandsplit is something new to me. Thank you for the help! Tim

The bandsplit is the area of frequencies it covers.

For example: Some UHF Radios are 450-470 Mhz some are 430-512 MHz, etc.
In God we trust. Everyone else, we run through NCIC, Thinkstream, and III.

Okay, I see now what I was doing wrong, duh!! I have to follow the instructions a bit closer, now it makes sense. I was also trying to use a chart I found on another website, but it wasn't jiving with what I had for numbers. I'm trying to figure out how to do it myself rather than ask someone else to do it for me, now that I know it it will come in handy for the future. Pretty neat way of listing all the different configurations. The guys over on elightbars told me to come here and ask for help, they were right! This is all new to me, thanks for the help!

I just won the radio on Ebay (God help me...), and the number on the back, according to the seller, is:

H43EPU7120AN

Now, I have it as the following, see if I'm correct:

Handheld
40 watt
Hi band
EPU- ??????? couldn't find this one?????
coded squelch
narrow band
"fleet radio"???

The seller also wrote and told me:

model # H43EPU7120AN
Operating Freq. 151.8050 N612
I do not think thats what it is really transmitting on.
I believe it was re programmed.

Now, I need to get this programmed to 154.310 and several others very, very close to that frequency. Now please tell me it can be done and I didn't buy the wrong radio with the wrong bandsplit??!!!! :cry:

there is no handheld radio that is 40 watt!!!!! if it were a handheld radio the letter in the model number would be "p" for portable.

Yes, I thought the 40 watt was wrong, I'm reading the list wrong...

Are you looking at the mobile page as opposed to the portable page?

This page has a model chart which may be what you are looking for.

It does not match up on those first 3 letters - but should give you a rough understanding of power out.

If someone here has a service manual, it should have the right breakdown.

Why Don't you post the ebay auction number here, and we can maybe see a photo of the radio (as suggested originally) and maybe take it from there.

It is a VHF P100 pictured on eBay. The "H43" would be a 5W VHF radio. I don't have a manual for the P100 series but the "7120" model number generally indicates a 2 channel radio, not 6 channel as described.

The picture of the unit only shows 2 channels on the top escutcheon. (Of course, some radios can be 'hacked' to support more... Not sure if the P100 is one of them, though.)

I'm not familiar with P100 bandsplits, but I think you're all set, as the frequencies are relatively close and the splits I've seen usually end at 151. Don't hold me to that, though.
