What radios do you own?: HT1550's, X9000's, CDM1550's

full power on uhf is 4 watt, your range depends on your terrain, you will get more range out in a flat desert than you will in a downtow major city or in the hills.

What's your definition of 'ideal conditions'? I've easily reached over 50 miles from hilltop to hilltop with 4-watt UHF portables. I've also done the same with 3-watt 800MHz portables.

Ground level with no obstructions such as over water, somewhere between 10-20 miles shouldn't be a problem.

I've had them in areas such as gypsum tunnels where you could literally yell further than they worked.

Pretty well any other scenario, your mileage varies dramatically.
